I was pleasantly surprised to find this cactus (Echinocactus horizonthalonius) growing so abundantly in this part of Texas. The tops of these cacti were covered with white felt and numerous seed. It is a puzzle how these plants grow in what looks like a gravel bed at Stillwell Ranch. The only plant like this that I have ever tried to grow never did root - even in good soil - and died the first season.
